Tuesday night ideas

These are a selection of ideas for Tuesday night events - please let Tom know if you have suggestions for others or want to make changes.
Blockbusters
Family Fortunes
'We asked 100 people... Name something that...' - 2 players are up, one from each team. The first to press the buzzer says their answer. If it's the top answer, their team can play or pass. If not, the other player gets the chance to better it. Whichever team plays, if they get 3 wrong answers, the other team give one answer which they can confer on, and will steal the points if it's one of the correct ones.
Pictionary
Drawing game - remember that some people might be good at this so it's good to have as many objects as you can.
Charades
Chinese Charades
In this version the team stands in a line, and the person at the front does their acting to the next person. Everyone else must look away. Then that person acts to the next person, and so on until the last person has been acted to. They have to guess what the mime was, and if wrong, it goes back up the line for the previous person to guess.
Quizzes
Various themes include music quiz, & quiz of the year. Or several different themed rounds, for example: - Which came first, xxx or yyy? - True or False?: xxxxx - What song are these lyrics from? xxxxx - A round where every answer is a colour - Questions about things that have happened in the last 10 months (if 10 questions)
The Ranges
eg, How many people have walked on the moon? You have to give a range that you think the answer is in. So if you know the answer is 12, say 12-12 which is a range of 0. If you're not sure, say between 5 and 30. The team who has the correct answer within their range, AND the smallest range, gets the point.
More or Less
As the name says, each team has to guess if the answer is more or less. For example, is the average kettle boiled more or less than 5 times per day? Answer is 4, so less. There are probably variations, such as 'Closest' wins, or 'Closest without going over'.
Sussed
We have also called this 'You know me so well'. Questions such as 'Do you try and speak the foreign language on holiday?' and teams have to guess what the person at the front writes as his/her answer. Other rounds include: Design my perfect garden. Choose my perfect Easter egg (from a list of many pictures).
Ransom Notes
Board game where each team has a pool of words, and has to use them to describe the word on the card. As far as I know, we have not played this yet.
Guess the topic / Well parrots fly
The board game is actually called Anti-draft. One person comes up front, and there is a topic such as 'Counties that are also things', and team members have to give one-word clues. e.g. China, W(h)ales etc. From those clues, the player at the front has to guess the topic. For a Tuesday night with 3 or r teams, one team says their clues, and the others Teams have to guess. A variation is 1 person from the clue giving team is instead a guesser. Extra points if he/she guesses it on his/her own, but the other teams don't guess it. Another variation is to have a 2nd or 3rd round of clues, although less points should be awarded than if guessed on first round.
Taboo
Describe a word to your team members without saying any of the 5 words on the card. eg. describe 'Christmas' and the words you can't say could be 'santa', 'carols', 'presents', 'noel', 'mince pie'.
Sort it Out!
Teams have to guess the correct sort order of the topic on the card, using the five answers. e.g. Put these animals in order of weight: giraffe, elephant, rhino, hippo, wildebeest. As well as the bought game, you can add categories of your own such as 'Restaurants in Stevenage rated on TripAdvisor'.
Scattergories
There is a category, e.g. vegetables, and a letter, e.g. C, and each team has to write down as many answers they can think of, e.g. carrot, cauliflower etc. Points are scored only for answers that neither of the other teams have given.
Pointless
The aim of the game is to come up with answers to a category that are obscure, and out of 100 people questioned, very few or none would have thought of it. So in this game the team with the LEAST number of points wins. For example, if the category is fruits, then lots of people might think of bananas, so you may get 70 points for that. But if you say 'ackee' then maybe no-one would have said that and you get 0 points.
Blankety Blank
One person comes up front and is asked to fill in the blank on a piece of paper. e.g. It was so hot yesterday, my _____ melted. Everyone else, either individually or in teams, has to write down what they think the person up front will write. Points are scored if they correctly guess what answer was written. Update: With enough players it works well to have 3 people (1 from each team) come up to the front. There are also a couple of other rounds, both with one word and you have to guess the other, e.g. Sun ____ One variation has points already decided (see the actual board game cards), and another is where people come up to the front and write down their suggestions. On the night, the latter with people coming up worked better.
Jigsaws
500 piece jigsaws seem to work well, and ideally bring down 2 or 3.
Wheel of Fortune
The answers to each round are simple phrases, for example 'Heading for the Airport'. We start with the letter placements i.e. _______/__/___/________ and then the first team chooses a consonant. They carry on until they get a letter wrong and it passes to the next team. You can 'buy' a vowel whereas consonants are free. Choose a price so it's not too prohibitive. The wheel comes in at the start of the round - it gets spun, and the number of points on offer might come up... or it could be something like 'You're bankrupt'!
Wordle / Lingo
The idea is to try and guess a 5 letter word. On the board, 5 placement lines are drawn _ _ _ _ _. Then team 1 guesses a 5 letter word. If a letter is in the word and the correct position, they get a green dot. If a letter is in the word, but not in the correct position, they get a black dot. And if the letter isn't in the word at all, they get a red dot. For example, if the word to guess is 'ZEBRA' and the guess is 'TEAMS' then it would look like this: 'R G B R R' (R for red, etc.) Then the next team has their guess, and on it goes until a team gets the word. Best done in 3 teams and a limit of 2 minutes.
Cranium & Dingbats
These are many different short rounds including: - Make something e.g. a deckchair out of plasticine and your team have to guess the object - One person moves a teammate's arms and legs to denote an action, e.g. a snake charmer - Solve anagrams - Catchphrase - this is the dingbats part - Blind pictionary - draw something with your eyes closed - Guess the phrase... some letters given, the rest are given as dashes e.g. ---n- ---n - t--- is 'once upon a time' - 3 words or phrases associated with a topic (e.g. 'sports day')... one person writes 3 down (e.g. 'prizes', 'egg and spoon', 'running', and the others in the team have to match what they write down. - Spell a given word backwards. - What does this long word mean? Multiple choice - 4 possible answers
Pictionary Variation
In this variation, the player draws his/her word, for example a horse. Then the sketch is shown to the next person who writes what he/she thinks it is. e.g. horse. Then the next person draws that word. Then the next person writes what he/she thinks it is, e.g. a cow, which is not quite what we started with! I
Pictionary Variation - 2
In this game the person drawing has no idea what the word is. Instead, someone else in their team directs them with verbal commands, such as 'draw a big circle', 'now draw a horizontal line in the middle of the box' etc.
Pictionary - variation 3
In this game, the person at the front 'drawing' doesn't actually have a pen. Instead he/she draws with fingers. and the others in the team have to follow and draw themselves (the team members do have a pen).
The Fishbowl Game
You need around 80 words or phrases written on bits of paper and placed in a bowl. One member from Team 1 comes to the front and has 50 seconds to DESCRIBE as many words as possible. Any words not guessed can go back in the bowl. Any words guessed go in a new pile. Then someone from Team 2 etc. For the second round, all the words from round 1 go back in the bowl. This time though people have to ACT the word. It's harder for their team member's to guess, but then they might remember many of the words from the first round. For the third round, again all words go back in the bowl. This time people have to say just 1 word. Typical categories are places, people, actions, things, movies animals, movies etc.
Name that Tune
The idea of this game is to guess a well known song from the lyrics, which slowly appear as teams call out numbers between 1 and 20, which correspond to a section of the song. For example, team 1 might start with '3' and the answer given is 'no'. They probably won't guess it from that, so Team 2 might try word '6', and the answer is 'easy'. Again, they probably won't guess the song from those two words, so it's on to Team 3. They might say word '4' and the answer given is 'Heaven'. So now we have: _ _ no heaven _ easy_ _ _ etc, and they might guess 'Imagine' by John Lennon.
Knowing Me Knowing You
Before the event, everyone is asked to fill in a questionnaire, with questions such as 'Your favourite holiday destination'. Then on the night, we have to guess who the person is that dreams of travel to Ecuador and loves coffee. ALTERNATIVE VERSION One person goes up and picks a card, which might have a question like ' What phone app do I use the most?'. They write down their answer, but also everyone else, and points are scored for anyone who guesses correctly.
The 1% Club
Based on the TV game, this is a series of puzzles such as 'What comes next in the sequence' WTFS' and the answer is 'S' (Wednesday, Thursday etc.). There are lots of examples online.
Tension
Each card has a topic, for example Green Things, and the team whose turn it is has a minute to shout out as many words relating to the topic as they can. But you only score a point if the word matches one of the 10 on the card!
The Wheel
BA simple quiz game where each team spins the wheel. If it lands on red, they miss a turn. If it lands on yellow, they get a bonus turn. Otherwise they answer the question that comes up, which is multiple choice. The questions are divided into one of several categories, e.g. Travel, and before the round starts each team gets to pick 2 categories. To win, each team has to answer 1 question correctly from each category, including the categories that the other teams chose.
Deal or No Deal
Played individually, one person comes up to the front with a sealed amount from £1 to £250,000. The board has all these amounts listed. 4 people reveal their sealed amounts, and these are struck from the main board. The banker makes an offer to the contestant to stop the game and win a certain sum. But the contestant hopes they have a high amount in their sealed envelope and so may crry on. Then 3 more reveal their sealed amounts. The another offer. If still playing, 3 more reveal their sealed amounts. So now we have 2 unknown amounts left, 1 of which is the contestant's. There is a final offer. The contestant either accepts the offer or keeps their sealed amount.
Birthday Quiz
Various rounds to do with birthdays, e.g. - Things that happened in the year I was born - How old was I when?... (e.g. when I passed my driving test) - Match these friends with this list of suggested presents - Match Happy Birthday written in different languages to these languages
Categories
This is all about guessing a series of words within a given category with a cryptic clue. A simple example is the category 'chocolate' and one one of the words might be 'Lion Bar'. The clue could be 'Cat's Pub'.
Two Truths and a Lie
Everyone writes down 2 truths and a lie on a piece of paper, and the host takes each in turn and reads out the 3 'facts' Everyone has to guess a) who wrote them and b) which is the lie. The person who did write them will be on one of the teams guessing so you could ask them to keep quiet if they know it's them.
